Dani Le Rose Flirts with Danger on “I’ve Told Lies”
There is much more than meets the eye with Dani Le Rose. The Canadian singer’s sultry new single “I’ve Told Lies” deals with a complex, convoluted relationship and has some understated production from Milos Angelov. Even though some other up-and-coming artists in the pop realm with a song called “I’ve Told Lies” might have explored a more innocent theme, this release, particularly in conjunction with its effectively unsettling video, reaches for something much more twisted and alluring.
At the crux of the track seems to be an inherent friction between Le Rose’s emotionlessness and her desire to dive into the world of her obsessive partner. The video shows several uncomfortable shots of actor Len Harvey being overbearing toward Le Rose in different ways, concluding with him tying her up and wheeling her out of the frame and into the unknown. Even though she plays the emotionally stunted character well, often staring hollowly into the camera, she exudes sexuality in her smooth vocal delivery and she describes wanting to deepen the relationship. As the song’s bridge leads into the chorus, Le Rose offers some telling phrases as she sings, “I’ve told lies for my whole life / now it’s time to tell you why / take me to the deep end, tell me all your secrets / I wanna figure you out.” Perhaps the lies that she told in the past were about her previous avoidance of this kind of all-consuming love affair.
The other aspect of “I’ve Told Lies” that shouldn’t go without mention is Angelov’s restrained yet compelling production. The track has an atmospheric vibe with sparse beats and some deceptively sophisticated harmonies. The bass part stands out in particular for its unique sound and more active performance set against the song’s otherwise ethereal sound palette.
Even though Dani Le Rose is still making a name for herself in the music industry, she brings a mature sound and a captivating presence that will surely garner attention. If she can continue in the direction set by “I’ve Told Lies,” with its dark, haunting tone and understated yet stimulating production, her music career will undoubtedly take off.
