The Edmonton-based rock band The Velveteins have a new single “Midnight Surf” and a slew of tour dates in preparation for the release of their upcoming debut album Slow Wave, due out May 12. The song was thematically inspired by slow wave sleep, and has a dreamy production aesthetic to match its meditative theme.
“Midnight Surf” is a tale of two halves, with two contrasting sections that apparently began as separate projects. The first part of the song begins with a bed of synths and minimal percussion setting the stage for Morphy’s affected vocals. There’s a sense of disconnecting from reality and entering into an alluring dream world, highlighted by the lyrics, “Tonight with me, close your eyes and you can see.” The music then transitions seamlessly into the more hard-hitting second part of the song, complete with soaring vocal delivery from Morphy, big vocal harmonies, and a screaming guitar solo.
The Velveteins show a unique approach to music making and production on “Midnight Surf” with lush soundscapes and explosive energy that should make Slow Wave an exciting release.
