Indie-rock quartet Young Earth from Dublin, Ireland looks to keep their young spirit going with their latest single, “Got A Secret.”
Young Earth made their debut a year ago with their upbeat love song, “Maggie” and followed it up with a slower song in “Bloodlove.” “Got A Secret” is the group’s third single and fans who have been keeping tabs on the band since last year should definitely be impressed with the noticeable expansion of their style. The song is just as upbeat and lively as “Maggie” with a little difference: While “Maggie” is more happy-go-lucky, “Got A Secret” goes towards a mildly-fiery and mean sound.
Young Earth wastes no time with the introduction and immediately kicks off with muted guitar strums, kick-stick clicks, and vocals that sing the line, “You are the ghost of everything that I used to know.” Right from this first part, it’s very easy to pick out where the song’s mean attitude is coming from: the blues-ey melody and the triplet melody rhythm. These features remain consistent throughout the song.
The performance of the song throughout is for the most part solid. The vocalists—both the lead and backing vocals—accurately capture and convey the song’s attitude. Additionally, The lyrics are well-written and the lead vocalist doesn’t miss a single low and high note. The guitars also play a huge role in making the song sound pleasurable as well, as there is a wide range of notes and power chords.
The guitarists pretty much nailed them while leaving a little room for more polishing to spare. Lastly, the drums do just of an effective job carrying the song along with its highly rhythmic arrangement, but the only minor thing that I don’t like is the washy hi-hat sounds a little too awkward—at least for the song.
Perhaps the best aspect of this song is that no part is overdone. It’s easy enough to listen to and therefore it appeals to a very wide range of indie, rock, and pop fans. Young Earth sprinkles elements of 60s and contemporary rock throughout. There’s nothing about this song that would rub listeners the wrong way.
Overall, Young Earth has a likeable song with a likeable style in their single “Got A Secret.” As the band’s third single release, it has shown they have progressed well so far. “Got A Secret” only builds excitement towards the next single or even first album release.
