24Our Music recently spoke with Flavia Abadia. We talked about her career and new single ‘Enough of This’
Filmed in the Algarve, Faro, Portugal by Michelle-Andrea Girouard.
What’s the inspiration behind ‘Enough of This’?
I wrote Enough Of This because I felt like I was stuck in a circle with the same things happening over and over with someone in my life and I was tired of it. Human relationships aren’t always simple, and it can get frustrating.
Enough Of This doesn’t only have to be about being in a relationship with a partner, it can be with a friend, a family member, a coworker, etc.
How’s been the response you’ve been for ‘Enough of This’?
The response has been great! It’s been really nice! People have messaged me saying it’s their favourite song of mine so far. Spotify playlists have picked it up. I really appreciate everyone’s support. Every share, every like, every play means a lot to me! I do this out of love and passion and put a lot of time and effort into it so to see people respond, play it and love it means everything!
What do you want your fans to take-away from this song and music video?
Sometimes I feel like there’s nothing left to say, this song was my way of getting those feelings out. Hopefully, it can help someone who feels the same way too. If not, then people can enjoy it for the melody and the tropical vibes. I think it’s up to the person listening what they take away from it. That’s the beauty of music and art!
Are there any female artists you admire?
Of course! I love Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Anitta, Rihanna, Beyonce and many more. I love the mixing and fusion of genres, that’s really interesting to me.
What made you decide you wanted to pursue a career in music?
I’ve always wanted to sing. It’s been what I wanted to do since I could talk. I did the traditional thing of going to University, making sure I get my degrees and then in 2013 I got in a car accident. It was totally out of my control, I was a passenger in a taxi and got hit by a drunk driver driving a truck. While I was recovering I was thinking how lucky I am to be here and that life is too short not to do what you want. So I’m going for it full time and following my passion!
How would you best describe your style and sound?
My style and sound is evolving. I would say I guess it’s all under the pop umbrella. I’m inspired by so much. Some of the music I’ve released is more R&B and Hip Hop influenced, Enough Of This has more of a World feel with some dancehall and electronic elements. It’s a fusion. I like adding different flavours in my music.
What is your recording process like?
In general, I have an idea of what I want before we start. I work with a producer and tell them the feeling, rhythm, what I want to convey and we work on the beat together. I then write on it as they’re putting the finishing touches and is working on certain parts of the beat. Sometime’s I’ll take the beat home to write on it. I hum melodies and write lyrics. I like creating with someone. There’s something so special about vibbing off of each other and creating something great and unique. Sometimes we end up with something different then we had planned which is also very cool. I love the process!
Are there any other artists you would like to collaborate with in the future?
Omg YES!! So many: Major Lazer, Maitre Gims, J Balvin, Anitta, Maluma, Karol G, Camila Cabello (I would love to open for her on tour) Marshmallow, Martin Garrix, Alesso, DJ Snake and more.
Is there anything you do to get in “the zone” before a performance?
Before I sing I like to have a few moments alone. I also like keeping my energy up! So either dancing around, positive self-talk and an energy drink if I really need it (although I try not to take those). If I’m performing as a DJ only then I just go and do my thing, I don’t feel like I need a ritual or anything before because the focus is on the crowd, not on me.
What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had during your career so far?
There have been a few experiences. I would say when I hear or see people singing my song it makes me feel so so loved!! Every song I write is a piece of me so it’s cool to see people appreciating it!
I want to get back to you with a bigger epic moment at a later time ;).
Is there any advice you have for upcoming musicians?
I feel like I’m learning and growing every day. What I would say is to keep an open mind, do stuff for free when you’re starting, there’s no sense in feeling entitled, respect the people you work with that means to respect their time, talent and make sure you pay them! (unless you have a different agreement). This is a business in building long-term relationships. You want to think long-term, not what you can get the most now out of the short term. Be kind! Always! And follow your vision and your heart.
You have a podcast “My Best Life Podcast”. Do you have anything planned for the next upcoming episodes?
Yes! I love the podcast because I get to learn from other people and hear their stories. You’ll have to wait and see for the upcoming episodes! I like to change it up because I think there’s something to learn from people of different backgrounds and career paths.
You also DJ too, what would be your ideal set to get a party started?
I would have to see the crowd to know. I cater the music to what they would like. I look at the type of event, the setting, what they’re drinking, what they’re wearing, their age and I can get a pretty good idea of what type of music they would like so I start with that. I make sure people have fun and I switch it up so people stay excited and get to hear what they want.
What’s next for Flavia?
Ouuu so much!! I’m very excited!! First I’ll be promoting the song and video for Enough Of This, (which 24Our Music got the exclusive World Premier on!!). Then I’ll be filming a music video in Cuba for one of my new unreleased songs called “Trumpets”. It’ll be released later this summer. It has a tropical, Latin vibe to it. There’s an original English version with a bit of Spanish and then a remix version with a female Spanish rapper. It sounds sick!!
I’ve also been working on a lot of music so I’ll be releasing singles throughout 2018 and 2019 which is very exciting!!
I’m excited for what’s to come!! We never really know what’s coming, but I’m excited to meet the adventures coming my way!
