When new broke of rapper Lil Peep‘s death in November of 2017, Marshmello was one of the fellow musicians who seemed to take the loss hardest. It turns out the producer had been in the studio with the emerging talent, and while he originally did not plan to share the fruits of that labor, he’s now promised to release the song this Friday (Jan. 12).
Lil Peep was 21 when he died of a drug overdose. Autopsy reports showed he’d used a drug laced with the deadly opiate Fentanyl. He was notable for his music’s innovative mix of emo and hip-hop and is remembered by peers, fans and critics as a promising rapper, singer and musician cut down before his prime.
Marshmello said he changed his mind about releasing the song after Peep’s mother asked him to share her son’s music with the world.
